EVANESCENCE Among Most Commonly Misspelled Internet Searches

October 18, 2006

According to TheAge.com.au, EVANESCENCE is one of the top five most commonly misspelled Internet searches based on data recently released by No. 2 search engine Yahoo!

In Yahoo!'s top 20 list, published on its Buzz blog, "Rachael Ray" (a U.S. celebrity chef) is misspelled most commonly, followed closely by actress Scarlett Johansson and EVANESCENCE.

Barbra Streisand, Jaime Pressly, Britney Spears and Eva Mendes also feature prominently on the list.

Like most search engines, Yahoo! is able to detect misspelled words and, in many cases, will suggest an alternative, more accurate, spelling.

"Thanks to our advanced computerized technology, we can catch most of your mistakes and provide you with the correct result," said Yahoo! in the blog statement.

Yahoo!'s findings confirm by implication what many have suspected for some time: that the Internet has fostered carelessness in written expression.

Research from comScore Networks, released in September, indicates that Yahoo! is the second most popular search engine with 28.7 per cent of the U.S. market. It trails Google, which boasts a 44.1 percent share.
